What is the SEER rating?
The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) measures the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment. It calculates the cooling output per dollar of electricity used, compared to other systems. SEER ratings typically range from 13 to 21, with higher numbers indicating greater efficiency. For example, a three-ton unit might have a SEER rating of 13, 14, or 15. For more detailed information about SEER ratings, please consult our HVAC professionals at Metro Air Conditioning Heating & Services. Why is the SEER rating on the energy guide different than what my dealer quoted?
The SEER rating of a system depends on the combination of equipment installed in your home. While each split system cooling unit has a nominal SEER rating, this can be increased by upgrading the indoor unit within the same series. Both outdoor equipment (heat pump or air conditioner) and indoor equipment (evaporator coil and furnace or air handler) contribute to the overall SEER rating. Regular maintenance is crucial for maximizing the lifespan of your heating and cooling systems and preventing common equipment failures. These systems undergo constant operation, which can lead to wear and tear over time. Routine preventive maintenance inspections can identify issues such as leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires, and corroded electrical contacts. It's advisable to schedule maintenance regularly to ensure optimal efficiency and preempt potential future problems. What equipment requires regular (or preventative) maintenance?
Based on our experience, heat pumps and air conditioners should undergo professional maintenance twice annually, typically in spring and fall. For boiler and furnace systems, inspections should cover ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, chimneys, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, oil tanks, and all components of the furnace and boiler. Heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should include examinations of the fan, compressor, indoor and outdoor coils, and refrigerant lines. For scheduling an inspection, please contact our HVAC technicians.I need help troubleshooting a problem with my equipment. What should I do?

Programmable thermostats offer superior accuracy and efficiency compared to mercury-containing thermostats due to their electronic nature. They allow for automatic temperature control at different times of the day without manual adjustments. This automation ensures consistent temperature management without the risk of forgetting to change settings. For more information about programmable thermostats, please consult our HVAC specialists. What type of filter should I use and how often should I replace it?
According to home improvement expert Bob Vila, HVAC air filters should be replaced every one to three months. Standard filters maintain system and ductwork cleanliness but don't significantly improve indoor air quality. For enhanced air quality, consider a media air cleaner, which can improve dust and particle removal up to seven times more than a standard filter. Pleated media filters can remove various contaminants, including airborne viruses. Always select a filter that matches your blower's capacity. Our HVAC professionals recommend replacing disposable filters monthly for optimal efficiency and filtration. Washable filters should be cleaned monthly. Why can't I find the correct size furnace filter at my local home improvement store for my Trane brand equipment?
Trane filters are manufactured using higher-quality materials compared to disposable filters found in retail stores. As a result, replacement Trane filters are exclusively available through authorized Trane dealers. It's worth noting that some Trane filters are reusable and can be hand-washed in cold water.
